The Society for Under-Represented Groups (SURG) is a graduate-student-run organization at DePaul’s philosophy department. Since its creation in the Spring of 2012, the Society provides spaces for underrepresented students and those working in underrepresented areas of philosophy to offer and receive personal, intellectual, and professional support.
The Society organizes events, such as talks, reading groups, and workshops, that offer its members the opportunity to engage with methodologies and perspectives that are often not featured prominently in our discipline. SURG also organizes informal discussions to give those underrepresented the opportunity to share their experiences and the challenges they face as they work, teach, and learn in our department and in our discipline.
SURG is committed to a non-hierarchical system of governance that allows for the sharing of responsibility and open conversations. As a result, SURG’s definition and purpose continue to change as new people, ideas, and issues enter the conversation.
